Autor: P. L. Zervas, A. Tatsis, H. Sarimveis, N. C. Markatos, M. K. Koukou
Wydawnicwo: Nova Science Pub Inc
Rok wydania: 2008
Ilość stron: 88
Opis: Fuel Cells appear currently as being one of the most promising technologies for power generation, due to the combination of benefits they offer. Fuel-cell systems are environmentally benign, highly efficient, flexible, durable and easy to maintain. The investigation of the impact of various process parameters on fuel cell operation is, thus, of particular importance. Many attempts have been made towards this direction. Among them, a popular and promising approach relies on the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. In this book, the fundamental principles of fuel cells operation and the mathematical formulation of a generic CFD model - including transport and electrochemical phenomena are presented in detail. Sample results that illustrate the validity of the CFD model are presented next. A wide range of process-parameters values is examined, in order to investigate the influence of each one on the performance of the fuel-cell system. In order to reduce the size and improve the flexibility of the CFD model, a database containing the results of many runs is developed and is used to develop a simpler input-output model. The new model explores the highly non-linear relationships and reveals the mathematical correlations that exist between input and output parameters. Finally, nomograms generated from the developed input-output model are presented in detail which turns out to be a useful design tool for engineers interested in Fuel Cell Technology.

Tytuł: Fuel Cell Research Trends
Autor: L. O. Vasquez
Wydawnicwo: Nova Science Pub Inc
Rok wydania: 2008
Ilość stron: 486
Opis: A fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device. It produces electricity from external supplies of fuel (on the anode side) and oxidant (on the cathode side). These react in the presence of an electrolyte. Generally, the reactants flow in and reaction products flow out while the electrolyte remains in the cell. Fuel cells can operate virtually continuously as long as the necessary flows are maintained. Fuel cells differ from batteries in that they consume reactants, which must be replenished, while batteries store electrical energy chemically in a closed system. Additionally, while the electrodes within a battery react and change as a battery is charged or discharged, a fuel cell's electrodes are catalytic and relatively stable. Fuel cells are very useful as power sources in remote locations, such as spacecraft, remote weather stations, large parks, rural locations, and in certain military applications. A fuel cell system running on hydrogen can be compact, lightweight and has no major moving parts. Because fuel cells have no moving parts, and do not involve combustion, in ideal conditions they can achieve up to 99.9999% reliability. This equates to less than one minute of down time in a six year period. This book presents new leading-edge research in the field.

Tytuł: Fuel Cell Systems
Autor: L.J.M.J. Blomen, M.N. Mugerwa
Wydawnicwo: Springer
Rok wydania: 1994
Ilość stron: 636
Opis: Fuel Cell Systems is an exellent compilation by sixteen authors who are experts in their fields. It covers not only the details of the electrochemistry and thermodynamics of fuel cells but also the economics and limitations of fuel cell sytems. It also has excellent chapters on fuel processing and details on each different type of fuel cell. There is a history of fuel cells at the beginning of the book and a section of marketing at the back so it covers all areas that one could be interested in. The editors made one chapter logically lead to the next and included a good index at the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand the technical aspects of fuel cells and their applications. Since fuel cell technology is advancing very quickly and the book was printed in 1994 it does not include the very latest developments but the principles it explains are applicable to almost any system.

Tytuł: Fuel Cells, Engines and Hydrogen: An Exergy Approach
Autor: Frederick J. Barclay
Wydawnicwo: John Wiley & Sons
Rok wydania: 2006
Ilość stron: 200
Opis: Fuel Cells, Engines and Hydrogen is a controversial text that challenges the accepted industry parameters for measuring fuel cell performance and efficiency. Based on his inter-disciplinary experience in the fields of power, nuclear power, and desalination, the author contends that the development potential of the fuel cell is related to the quantity fuel chemical exergy, which, like electrical potential, is a quantitative measure of work done. The fuel cell community currently characterises these devices in terms of the enthalpy of combustion (calorific value), however the author argues a correct, qualitatively different and fourfold larger characterisation is via the fuel chemical exergy, in units of work, and not energy. He asserts that the distortion introduced by this accepted perspective needs to be corrected before relatively efficient fuel cells, integrated with comparatively low performing gas turbines, reach the market.

Ilość stron: 216
Opis: The theory, design, construction, and operation of microbial fuel
cells
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), devices in which bacteria create electrical power by oxidizing simple
compounds such as glucose or complex organic matter in wastewater, represent a new and promising approach
for generating power. Not only do MFCs clean wastewater, but they also convert organics in these
wastewaters into usable energy. Given the world's limited supply of fossil fuels and fossil fuels' impact
on climate change, MFC technology's ability to create renewable, carbon-neutral energy has generated
tremendous interest around the world.
This timely book is the first dedicated to MFCs. It not only serves as an introduction to the theory
underlying the development and functioning of MFCs, it also serves as a manual for ongoing research. In
addition, author Bruce Logan, a leading pioneer in MFC research and development, provides practical
guidance for the effective design and operation of MFCs based on his own firsthand experience.
Tytuł: Modeling Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Methods, Procedures and Techniques
Autor: Bove R., Ubertini S.
Wydawnicwo: Springer
Rok wydania: 2008
Ilość stron: 398
Opis: This book is intended to be a practical reference to all scientists
and graduate students who are seeking to define a mathematical model for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC)
simulation. At present, there is a strong interest from both industry and academia in SOFC modeling, but
the resources are currently limited to technical papers, which usually fail to provide basic understanding
of the phenomena taking place in an SOFC, as well as to describe the different approaches needed for
different requirements. This situation is in contrast with the present demand in SOFC modeling, coming
from scientists, students and young researchers.
This work has three main objectives: Firstly, to
provide the necessary theory behind SOFC operation. Secondly, to analyze different approaches for SOFC
modeling. Thirdly, to present the reader with all the necessary tools for defining his/her own model,
according to his/her specific needs. The volume is structured in two parts. Part one presents the basic
theory, and the general equations describing SOFC operation phenomena. Part two deals with the application
of the theory to practical examples, where different SOFC geometries, configurations (from single cells
to hybrid systems), operating conditions (steady-state and dynamic), and different phenomena (e.g.
performance, temperature and chemical species, and mechanical stress distribution) are analyzed in detail.
